Emily Asher's Garden Party returns to NYC stages

Many lifetimes ago we played regularly in Brooklyn and Manhattan. For years Garden Party Trio and Quartet were musical mainstays in Manhattan’s Financial District. This month the band triumphantly returns to New York City stages to play the joyful music we recorded just weeks before the 2020 shut down.

You’re invited to join us for our two public performances this month

October 15 8pm Barbès Brooklyn
An intimate and beloved listening room in Park Slope, Brooklyn. $20 suggested donation. Garden Party Sextet
October 23 6-7pm Perelman PAC (PAC NYC)
Free and open to the public in the Lobby Stage of the impressive new venue in the World Trade Center area of lower Manhattan. Great for the whole family. Garden Party Septet

A new email went out recently to a reconstructed email list. If you’d like to receive occasional updates about my musical happenings please enter your email below. Check out the most recent newsletter for a preview.

Emily Asher
Releasing joy in a time of pain

UPDATE: My offer of a digital download as incentive for $20+ donation to racial justice and human rights organizations honored through Monday, June 8, 2020.

Never could I have imagined while planning and recording this new album that it would be released during a global pandemic. Not only are we without live performances, but singing and playing horns in public could be life-threatening (insert trombone joke here). Now, however, I think we need music more than ever! When I reflect on this album I am reminded of two specific cultures that made it possible. First, jazz is an art form we owe to the experience, creativity, and soul of black Americans. Second, my original songs on this album were inspired by the culture and people of Oaxaca, Mexico.

My hope is for this album to not only bring joy to as many ears as possible, but also leverage that joy as strength to move toward my deep desire for social justice and human rights.

I invite you to join me:

  • Thursday, June 4 through Monday June 8, if you make a donation of $20 or more to a racial justice or human rights organization I will honor it by sending you a digital download of If I Were a Window. Send me an email at emily@emilyasher.com letting me know you have donated and I will respond with a code for you.

  • Friday, June 5, the Bandcamp music platform is once again giving 100% of every purchase directly to artists (fees are normally 10-15%). All five of my albums will be available including physical copies and other merch. I will contribute 20% of all sales to social justice and human rights organizations.

Here are a few suggestions of organizations to consider. This is by no means an exclusive or exhaustive list:

Please note: if my suggesting that you and others contribute to support our black and brown communities makes you upset or uncomfortable, please remember that your rights and privileges are not restricted or diminished by the support of social justice and human rights of others. A rising tide lifts all boats.

If I Were a Window will be officially released on all major platforms July 25th, 2020, my 40th birthday. I am incredibly proud of this recording and all of the people who were involved in making it.

With love, gratitude and optimism,

Emily
